One of the most fun parts of having a new litter is coming up with the names. When we learned we were expecting puppies, we knew the kids were going to be involved in picking the theme and brainstorming names. It’s tradition at this point — and honestly, it’s one of my favorite family moments.
Here’s how we do it:
Step 1: Pick a Theme
We usually start brainstorming a few weeks before the puppies arrive. The theme needs to have enough options for however many pups we end up with, and it should feel right for that particular litter. Past themes we’ve loved? Hawaiian islands (Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Niihau), Space (Nova, Comet, Milky Way, Nebula, Eclipse, Orbit, Astro), and Fruits (Blueberry, Tangerine, Coconut, Kiwi, Peach, Plum, Lemon).
Step 2: Let the Kids Lead
This is the kids’ favorite part. They research the theme, suggest names, argue over the best ones (in the most adorable way), and we all vote. Some of their picks are serious, some are hilarious, but we always make it work together.
Step 3: Match Puppies to Names
Once the puppies arrive and we’ve spent a few days with them, we start assigning names based on personality. The independent, confident puppy might be Comet. The snuggler? Maybe Coconut. We watch them play, sleep, and interact before we finalize the match, so the name actually feels right for that puppy.
Why It Matters
Names are how people connect with these puppies before they even meet them. A puppy named Peach feels different than a puppy named Plum, even if they’re littermates. The right name helps their future families fall in love a little faster, and it makes our litters feel like they’re part of a story — a story we all helped write.
Plus, honestly? Picking these names gets everyone excited. The anticipation builds. The kids know the exact moment to expect puppies, and they’re ready with their list of names. It makes the whole thing feel like a family adventure instead of just a breeding schedule.
If you’re getting a Goldendoodle from us, you’ll get to see how much thought goes into those names. And if you’re thinking about breeding someday, give this a shot with your kids. The memories are worth way more than the logistics.
